IACS Press Release 7th June 2012
07/06/2012

IACS Council annual summer meeting.

IACS Council comprised of 13 Classification Society members met last week in Saint Petersburg, Russia for their annual summer meeting. It was hosted by the present Chairman, Mr Pavel Shikhov of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping.

Among a wide ranging number of issues, the IACS Quality System Certification Scheme (QSCS) was discussed and steps were taken to strengthen the scheme through performance benchmarking and other related measures.

IACS also welcomed the Secretary-General of IMO, Mr Koji Sekimizu, to one of their sessions in accordance with the normal practice of IMO attendance. Mr Sekimizu spoke to Council members on various matters, including his wish to develop an all embracing safety culture for shipping, describing it as a secure safety envelope reaching above and beyond a simple compliance based response for safety.

IACS reiterated their commitment to the provision of technical advice to the IMO. The Secretary-General kindly acknowledged this and thanked IACS for their continuing work for the Organization which has contributed significantly to the development of Goal Based Standards (GBS), a flagship current initiative at the IMO.

On 1st July Mr Tom Boardley of Lloyd?s Register will accede to the Chair and Mr Roberto Cazzulo of RINA will become Vice-Chair of IACS.
